Zhong Lin Wang tells Bourzac in this short article that nanoscale sensors free from human control are on the horizon. The problem, as Wang sees it, is in finding a way to free these sensors not only from human control but from the tethers of battery power. His solution so far has been to harness piezoelectric nanowires that would provide his sensors with a source of power that did not need recharging or replacing like batteries. Should he be able to harvest and even store the 2.4 volts he can currently produce using this method, he might be able to create sensors for a host of different applications.
