Chaos Control on the Nanoscale
Vol. 41, Num. 4
In this extremely short piece, Bearinger describes the way in which she operates on the nanoscale to create art. She [brings] together nanotechnology, polymer chemistry, materials science and optics to provide an image that serves both as an illusion of familiar substances (her mention of an oily spot that seems to exist in the picture) and a depiction of the unknown (the hydrogel, which causes the oily look, breaks up into many domains). Her biggest concern, or so her conclusion would suggest is that she uses this still piece to illustrate how the chaotic nanoscale can be brought under control through artistic means.
