From Two Cultures to New Cultures
Vol. 4, Num. 1
The Two Cultures referenced in the title plays on C. P. Snows The Two Cultures, which upbraids the sciences and humanities for not coming together to learn more about each others disciplines, a process that would only serve to better each. Toumey sees the STS field as the answer to this decades-old problem, a place where interdisciplinary conversation has ensured scientists will take the values of the humanities into account, at the very least in the end game if not during the process. The result, as he sees it, is that the STS writers like Colin Milburn will continue to write books some accurate and feasible and some not that will call into question the direction of nanotechnology and other emergent sciences, thereby keeping the scientific side of the equation from pursuing ends that are unjustifiable.
